The key to your hotel room isn’t an actual key but an app downloaded on your phone, which you hold to a scanner to unlock the door. Inside, you spray everything with the Lysol you brought with you. Doorknobs. Bathroom fixtures. The TV remote. You crack open the window to let in fresh air and replace the comforters and pillows on the beds with your own bedding. I’m a BIG believer in jury duty. It comes with the privilege of living in a democracy. It’s also pretty cool. I’ve covered lots of court proceedings as a journalist, but actually serving as a juror, as I did once for a drunken driving trial, offered another interesting view of the process. People have legitimate reasons for why they can’t serve on a jury. Fair enough. But the default starting position for many, maybe most, is to get out of it.
